A Message from our Camp Director
Hello, Camp Carvela Families!
Welcome! I’m Lisa, Camp Carvela’s Director. I'm so excited to be sharing this summer’s experience with you! I feel so fortunate to get to spend these summer days with all our campers and staff. Together, they all bring so much creativity, imagination, energy, and a love for the boundless nature that surrounds us here at Camp Carvela.
I fostered my love for nature and being “up north” as a child while spending my summers at the family cabin on the shores of Lake Superior. When it was time to find a summer job after high school, I knew I wanted to find an experience that was similar to my childhood setting--I found summer camps. I spent my college summers working for various camps around the Midwest in different camp roles, including serving as Waterfront and Program Director for Project Foxwood’s other residential camp, Camp Lookout.
I earned my Bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University in Technology Education in 2013 and then went on to work for various non-profit organizations in youth development roles, including roles at Ohio State University Extension, YMCA, and Camp Fire NW Ohio. I returned to Project Foxwood as Camp Carvela’s Director in 2023 — this time bringing my family along for the adventure. Now, my husband, Matt (a middle school social studies teacher) and our two kiddos, spend our summers living, working, and playing right here at Camp Carvela.
In keeping with the Project Foxwood philosophy, the entire Camp Carvela team is committed to upholding an inclusive, playful, and safe environment for our campers. We believe in collaborative programming (which means campers get to help design our daily camp activities!), having lots of free time to explore and create, and unplugging from technology so we can be fully present with ourselves and each other while at camp. Above all, we’re committed to having fun!
Some of my most treasured times at camp include watching campers trust their uniqueness, uncover their interests, and lean into the energy that comes with creativity. I love the “in-between” and unstructured times that our schedule offers, as this space gives our campers time to ignite their imagination and freedom to explore.
I welcome you again to this unique camp community and encourage you to explore all that we have to offer. I can assure you that at Camp Carvela you will find magic.
I’m here to support you, always.
Peace, Love, Camp,
Lisa Schlumbohm,
Director, Camp Carvela
